About restoring hope

Restoring Hope Initiative a Jordanian NGO

Established to support amputees by providing ground-breaking technology

The society has been providing prostheses for hundreds of war amputees in Gaza since September 2024.

The prostheses are developed by UK-based companies Koalaa (upper limbs) and Amparo (lower limbs), and are currently being used to treat amputees in Gaza, who are estimated to number over 16,000.

Upon directives by His Majesty King Abdullah to find a way to provide immediate and effective prosthetic care using innovative technology,  Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO) and the Royal Medical Services (RMS) sought ground-breaking technology for the fitting of functional prostheses for patients within one hour.

Background

  • The number of war injuries in Gaza has grown to horrific levels, with over 12,000 new amputees, 70% are women and children.
  • Rehabilitation is out of reach of patients and medical teams in Gaza.
  • Traditional prosthetic fitting is a lengthy process, requiring multiple visits and taking weeks or months.
  • Due to infrastructure destruction in Gaza, patients cannot leave their areas, while medical teams are unable to access the areas and the constant displacement of the wounded.

Innovative Solution

  • Mobile Amputee Support Units (MASUs): Bringing care directly to patients in conflict zones
  • Fast-Fitting Technology: Reducing fitting time from weeks to just 1.5 hours
  • Digital Integration: Connecting frontline teams with specialists for real-time consultations
  • Co-Creation Innovation: Developing solutions in direct collaboration with users and providers – ie the first children’s socket, and now trialing a solution for loss of upper arm.

The Path Forward

With your support, we can expand the Restoring Hope model beyond Gaza to conflict zones and under-resourced regions worldwide:

  1. Scale Deployment: Launch new Mobile Amputee Support Units in additional regions
  2. Advance Innovation: Develop next-generation prosthetics for challenging environments
  3. Train Specialists: Build local capacity through our digital training platform
  4. Create Sustainability: Establish regional innovation hubs and support networks
